April 25th: Communities, not cages.
This Saturday, April 25th, people across the country are taking to the streets for Communities Not Cages — a national day of action against ICE detention warehouses. And No Kings Westfield will be out in solidarity.
The United States has built a sprawling network of immigration detention facilities — warehouses, really — where people are held in conditions that have been called inhumane by doctors, lawyers, and human rights organizations alike. People detained in these facilities include asylum seekers, longtime community members, parents, and workers. Many have committed no crime. They are held without adequate medical care, without legal representation, and without a clear timeline for release.
This isn't a distant issue. Massachusetts is the only blue state with a 287(g) contract with ICE — an agreement that allows local law enforcement to act as federal immigration agents. On top of that, the state maintains an Intergovernmental Service Agreement (IGSA) that directly supports ICE detention operations. These contracts put our neighbors at risk and make our communities less safe, not more. They erode trust between immigrant communities and local institutions, discourage people from reporting crimes, and divert public resources to a federal enforcement machine.
Show up on Saturday. April 25th | 11 AM – 12 PM | Park Square, Westfield.
This is our prequel to May Day and part of the national Communities Not Cages day of action. One hour. Your presence matters.
Call your elected officials. The People's PROTECT Act would end Massachusetts' collaboration with ICE. Use the Action Kit at lucemass.org/peopleprotect to make your calls count.

THIS IS THE ON-RAMP TO MAY DAY
April 25th is how we build momentum. May 1st is how we use it. We're planning a rally from 2–4 PM at Park Square, our regular Friday overpass brigade from 4–5 PM, and we hope to bring a contingent to the WMALF march in Holyoke from 4:30–6:30 PM — all under the national Workers Over Billionaires banner.

We still need your help to make May Day big:
• Advertise: Like, comment, and share our posts on social media. Print and distribute flyers.
• Create signs: Labor themes, healthcare, housing, fair share, fair wages — a life worth living.
• Try out your voice: Help teach, at our teach-in!
• Network: Know a union member or organizer? Connect us — we need rally speakers.
• Create content: Labor history art, writing, digital content — share it or make it.
• Mobilize: Bring one new person to a Tuesday or Friday standout.
• Safety: Train to become a safety marshal for our public events. Let us know at [email protected] or in person.
• Contribute: Make a financial contribution to support the movement, or join our working team!
If you're a student: organize a walkout. Students have led every major movement in this country — from Vietnam War protests to anti-apartheid divestment. May 1st is your day too.
If you're a worker: take the day if you can. If you can't, don't shop — especially not at the corporations backing this regime. Amazon, Home Depot, Target, Citizens Bank. More boycott targets: iceoutboycott.com
If you're not sure where you fit: just show up. That's how every movement starts.
