Building Momentum!

Building Momentum!

Hello Patriots!

First, we want to announce our own Oct 18th #NoKings #NoBillionaires action here in Park Square at 11am!

We're fortunate to have an amazing group of regulars at the No Kings Westfield protests. To meet our goal of saving our democracy from authoritarianism, our group must grow and join with others. In resistance movements, momentum comes from Mass (number of activists) × Velocity (frequency of visible actions). Here's how this works for us:

If we grew our Tuesday group from 60 to 75 people but kept just one action per week, we'd increase our momentum by 25%. But that's not what happened! Instead, we added a second weekly action—Fridays at the I-90 overpass, where fifteen folks showed up last week. By doubling our weekly actions, we more than doubled our community visibility and impact. Think of it as "visibility points"—far more people saw us either on Tuesday or Friday than would have noticed if our Tuesday group had simply grown larger.

So how can you help build our momentum? Show up for more than one action, help Ground Avelo, recruit store owners for Signs of Solidarity, or come up with a whole new action! Yes, visibility via email, phoning, and social media all count. Just as important: for any action you take, ask someone to join you. By joining with other groups in the Connecticut River Valley, we create the synergy necessary to destroy the pillars supporting this autocracy and turn our small efforts into an unstoppable wave.

There is A LOT going on. Here are several ways to widen our reach:

  1. Tuesday, September 9th should provide glorious weather for our glorius pursuit towards a more perfect union. At 4:00pm we'll again be at Park Square protesting for democracy. We'll end at 4:45 this week to give time to head over to Holyoke.
  2. Holyoke City Council Protest - 536 Dwight Street, Holyoke, 5:30pm in front of the High Street entrance to City Hall. The Holyoke City Council is meeting at 6:30 to discuss passing a resolution stating that Holyoke is not a sanctuary city—essentially an invitation for ICE to target Holyoke for detention and deportation. Our presence will alert residents and give council members a vigorous signal about how citizens feel about this resolution. Many of us will be driving over to join this protest—we'll announce this during our 4:00 hour.
  3. Overpass Standout - No Kings Westfield now coordinates the standout at 130 Southampton Road in Westfield. We meet on the Interstate 90 overpass on Fridays, from 4:00 to 5:30pm. Bring signs with large clear lettering or use our bungee cords to secure signs to the fencing for drivers to see.
  4. Ground Avelo - Sunday, September 14th, 3:00 to 5:30pm at Route 75 Overpass over Route 20, just outside Bradley Airport (66 CT-75, Windsor, CT 06095). Avelo Airlines has contracted with the federal government for deportation flights. No Kings Westfield is a co-sponsor of this protest to force Avelo to cancel its ICE contract.

Momentum doesn't build by itself; it builds with all of us. See you Tuesday, and maybe bring a friend as well!

Speaking of momentum– you all gathered a great haul of peanut butter and jelly, which is on its way to Westfield Food Pantry today!
